Paredes de Coura Festival 2012 - the preview
My personal favorite festival Paredes de Coura is just ahead and we’re here to welcome it. Almost a landmark in Portugal, Paredes de Coura is turning twenty this year. And what a big boy it has become. From the likes of Sonic Youth, Arcade Fire, Dinosaur Jr., Queens of the Stone Age, Yo La Tengo, Mogwai, PJ Harvey, Pixies, Death from Above 1979, Morrissey, Bauhaus, The Cramps (and we could keep going), the shores of river Tabuão (that sets the perfect idyllic scenery) have seen it all. More than you probably will in your whole life.

Diamond Rugs is John McCauley (Deer Tick), Robbie Crowell (Deer Tick), Ian Saint Pe (Black Lips), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Hardy Morris (Dead Confederate) and Bryan Dufresne (Six Finger Satellite). You didn’t even need to listen to a single song to like them already, right? Diamond Rugs is out now on the amazing Partisan Records and they’ve just recently played this song on Letterman. Watch the performance below.

Deer what? We want Jack White, Foo Fighters and The Vaccines, not this kind of crap.
Today, Deer Tick was confirmed for the Paredes de Coura festival alongside with The Go! Team and Crystal Fighters. Almost no one gave a shit about it. Most people said variants to the phrase above, while others were ecstatic about the other two bands. I’m glad I’m no journalist and I’m able to disseminate my totally biased opinion about this without feeling bad about it right here and right now:
Fuck them. Deer Tick is the best rock and roll band in the world right now. Love letter/proof:
This is the first song on the first Deer Tick album. It’s better than most first songs on most debut albums. That’s actually not a biased opinion, that’s a fact.
This is from their second album, Born on Flag Day. It’s just as good as the first one, probably even better. This one is also better than all Bon Iver songs combined.
Besides writing amazing songs, they also rock the fuck out. This one sounds like something the Replacements would do after touring extensively with the Pogues.
This is some kind of homage to John Prine. John McCauley likes great music. He has a better taste than me, you and your favorite songwriter.
This is “Daydreaming”, a song off Middle Brother’s selftitled debut album. Middle Brother is John + the lead singers of Dawes and Delta Spirit. Those are pretty good songwriters as well. Also, John and Robbie Crowell from DT are in another kind of “supergroup” with members from the likes of Dead Confederate and Black Lips, Diamond Rugs. Their selftitled album was just put out on Partisan Records last April and is just as good as Middle Bro’s. See? Everything they touch turns into gold.
Now this is just the best song you’ll listen to today. Thank you for your attention and for deciding to change your life today, embracing Deer Tick’s greatness. Bolachas will be back to the default serious and very professional mode in 7 seconds. See you in August.
