Strange Land is Yellow Ostrich’s first album since it ceased to be the bedroom project of Alex Schaaf who released a cassette on Cakes and Tapes and turned into a full fledged, Barsuk-signed indie rock band. This is the result. I’m proud.
Strange Land is out next March 6th. You can still stream and buy the Cakes and Tapes-released Fade Cave EP below.
To get Brooklyn band POINT REYES off the ground, Asa Horvitz suggested that percussionist Kyle Farrell and cellist Daniel Bindschedler join him in Warsaw, Poland (where he was working supported by a Fulbright grant) to spend four months writing, rehearsing, and giving concerts in a completely foreign environment. Farrell and Bindschedler jumped at the opportunity and in May 2011 the trio moved into a sunny attic loft across from the Vistula river. Throughout the summer of 2011, POINT REYES immersed themselves in Poland: they performed in towns where no Americans had performed before, rehearsed ten hours a day in the basement of the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music, studied Polish, swam in flooded meadows, became obsessed with Communist architecture, played festivals in Krakow and Berlin, collaborated with Polish musicians and theater artists, and wrote and recorded their debut full length album. The project was funded in part by the Fulbright grant awarded to Horvitz. POINT REYES’ debut album is the culmination of their time in Poland. It will be released on CAKES AND TAPES (Portugal) in January 2012.
I’m so glad I’m able to work with talented people like this trio. For you, here’s BUILDINGS. Free streaming and download below. WARSZAWA is out tomorrow, January 12th 2012.

Brit indie-rockers The Wave Pictures will only release their forthcoming album, Long Black Cars next March, but wiaiwya has just put out their brand new 7” as the first installment on their 2012 singles series, wiaiwya-7777777. You can subscribe at wiaiwya.com and listen to one of the three songs from the single, “Sugar Maple Charcoal”, on the beautiful widget below.
Breton Parks’ debut album, Whelk, was criminally overlooked when it was released last Summer. He’s currently recording his yet unnamed sophomore record that should sound just about as good as the first one, judging from the sample he has just sent me for you all to listen. “Figure It Out On My Own” is the first song off it, a plain steady 90’s-infused indie rock song, the perfect song to kick off your first day of work of 2012. You can listen and download it below on the SC widget, and you can also listen to and download Whelk for free on his Bandcamp.
