Viva España

Once on the leading pack of the so-called slowcore movement, Spain hadn’t released an album since they called it a day in 2001. Frontman Josh Haden reformed the band with a new lineup in 2007 and 11 years after I Believe, Spain’s fourth album finally sees the light of day. The Soul of Spain is out next month and you can listen to a beautiful, alt-country tinged track off it, “Sevenfold”, on the player above this post.

Haden et al will be presenting the new album all across Europe (click to see tour dates) after a couple of Los Angeles shows during the month of May, including two concerts in Portugal: Lisbon (Lux) on the 18th, Porto (Hard Club) on the 19th.

Horrible present, haunted past.

If you run a somewhat high profile site/blog you surely receive dozens of emails per week. Some you don’t even bother to read and throw them in the garbage bin just after reading the headline (sorry), you might find others slightly interesting but not enough to post or there’s not enough time to do it, others contain some great, perfectly bloggable music inside and then there’s this rare sight: a sincere email where only a ten word sentence is written, alongside with a Soundcloud/Bandcamp link pointing to an awesome song performed by some perfectly unknown unsigned artist. This is the kind of email that made me want to start my own label, and this was the case with Horrible Present. “Classics at Night” was instantly gone into repeat mode and a couple of months later his exquisitely titled EP 54, I love you but it’s time to get off – which consists of his old EP 54 plus some new songs and b-sides – was released on our label Cakes and Tapes. Stream, download for free and buy one of the 15 remaining limited edition cassettes by clicking on the widget below.

I was thinking about writing a really lame pun as a title for this post (“Buzz LITEyear” was at the top of my list), but then I changed my mind because that would’ve been fucking stupid. So I’ll write about LITE instead: they’re a Japanese math rock band formed in 2003, and they’ve recently released a new mini-LP, Past, Present, Future, which you can find out there if you google it enough. “Bond” is its first single, a nice and funky track you can listen to in the video above. And now that I wrote about them like Henrique (who is the guitarist for an equally great band) asked me to in the hopes someone would bring them to Portugal, I can finally have a rest from a pretty hectic week. Also, Henrique, you guys still owe me pizza.

The Shape of NZ to Come

A while ago I talked about this great New Zealand punk band on another website I write for – which I will not mention here because it would be rude but you should totally check it out if you understand Portuguese or at least know how to use Google -, and I feel the need to talk about them here as well. Because they’re great. Not only because they’re as mad at the world as I am or WE are in general (let’s face it, you’re a kid on the Internet, you ARE fucking mad), but because they sound great. And you should listen to them because I am telling you to. And they’ve come up recently with two great tracks you can listen to here:
