Viva España

Once on the leading pack of the so-called slowcore movement, Spain hadn’t released an album since they called it a day in 2001. Frontman Josh Haden reformed the band with a new lineup in 2007 and 11 years after I Believe, Spain’s fourth album finally sees the light of day. The Soul of Spain is out next month and you can listen to a beautiful, alt-country tinged track off it, “Sevenfold”, on the player above this post.

Haden et al will be presenting the new album all across Europe (click to see tour dates) after a couple of Los Angeles shows during the month of May, including two concerts in Portugal: Lisbon (Lux) on the 18th, Porto (Hard Club) on the 19th.

Codeine reforms, plays Primavera Sound 2012

The best European festival is back in style: after announcing a second installation in Porto, Portugal in 2012, Primavera Sound has just announced the first acts who will play in both editions. Among them is Codeine, one of the quintessential American indie rock bands of the beginning of the 90s who are reforming – original lineup! – to play a series of selected shows in Europe next Spring and reissuing their back catalog. Guided by Voices (Barcelona only), Jeff Mangum, Yo La Tengo, Björk, Other Lives and Neon Indian are the other bands who’ll play Primavera next year. That’s quite an impressive early lineup, isn’t it?

Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Centro Cultural Vila Flor, Guimarães, Portugal – 23/10/2011

Trying to make Bolachas more like a “webzine” and less like a deposit of free album downloads, mp3s and video embeds, I’ve decided to start doing reports of live shows; we did some festivals in the past (Primavera Sound, Milhões de Festa, Paredes de Coura) and some proper concerts (I remember writing about a Tindersticks concert at Estarreja, the first Roky Mountains Tour in Madrid with Magnolia Electric Co., John Doe & the Sadies and the Handsome Family…) that unfortunately were lost on one of our countless, non-backuped server crashes and whatnot (except for that Milhões de Festa massive preview+report last summer). This time, we went to Guimarães’ (European Cultural Capital in 2012) best venue – and certainly among the best in the whole country and, why not, the Iberian Peninsula) – Centro Cultural Vila Flor, a renewed congress hall who was once part of the Minho university to see one of the best songwriters alive, Will Oldham (AKA Bonnie “Prince” Billy). And this is how it went.
