#235: Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, “Sideways to New Italy”

Is there anything more typical of music publications in the 21st century than waiting for an indie rock band to fail miserably with the release their second record? Don’t let them tell you “Sideways to New Italy” is lacking something important. The new Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever album has all the melodies and hooks you need to survive this festival-less summer so you can pretend everything’s fine. We’re adding a fourth sentence to this paragraph because it seems like it’s mandatory to reference the Go-Betweens and/or the Feelies every single time we talk about this band.

Jacob Faurholt used to be Crystal Shipsss by himself. But Crystal Shipsss is now a full blown band and they’re releasing a new EP full of slow burners like “Listening to Devil Town”, a song about, you’re right, listening to Daniel Johnston’s “Devil Town”. Crystal Shipsss EP is out next May 6th on digital + cassette. Daniel would be proud and I’ll probably throw a cassette into the stage when I see him performing at Optimus Primavera Sound by the end of May.

Crystal Shipsss, “Yay” (Cakes and Tapes, 2011)

Our label Cakes and Tapes has just returned with its 17th installment. Yay is the debut album from Crystal Shipsss, a sideproject of our favorite Danish songwriter Jacob Faurholt, who released one of the best albums of the year earlier on. Yay leaves all that quietness behind, drenches itself in reverb, it even tries to stab you at times in all its low fidelity glory, but it’s still infected by melodies that’ll stick in your head for hours. Mastered by master James Plotkin (Khanate, OLD, Jodis), Crystal Shipsss is quite the antithesis of Faurholt’s solo work but that doesn’t make it less interesting. Discover it below.

Yay is now available on digital and limited edition cassette (50 white C30 tapes) formats. Streaming is free, of course.
