#189: The Felice Brothers, “Undress”

In the beginning of the month, Americana heroes The Felice Brothers quietly released “Undress”. Their new collection of songs focuses on, well, 2010s USA, and it turns out to be possibly their most cohesive album – and its fantastic harmonies make it one of the catchiest records of the year so far.

On this week’s playlist: new songs by Ryan Pollie, Olden Yolk, David Berman’s Purple Mountains, Sam Cohen, Mikaela Davis, Pearl Charles, Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation, The National, Lowland Hum, Native Harrow, William Ryan Fritch, Michael Fracasso, Tōth, Luís Severo, Mega Bog, Joseph Shabason, Aviva le Fey, Little Mazarn, Shannon Lay, Matt Kivel, and Siskiyou.

#183: Weyes Blood, “Titanic Rising”

It doesn’t take long for the listener to realize Natalie Mering is an artist in her prime while listening to her fourth record as Weyes Blood. While the already remarkable “Front Row Seat to Earth” had its number of high peaks coupled with a couple of less remarkable moments, “Titanic Rising” is a serious contender for album of the year, and definitely a career best for someone we once thought was just Enya for people who order matcha lattes at modern coffee establishments. (Sorry about that.)

Plus new tracks by the likes of Vera Sola, Heather Woods Broderick, Siskiyou, Jake Xerxes FussellPhil Cook, Laura Stevenson, Alex Rex, M. Lockwood Porter, Los Coast, Super DopplerJonah Tolchin, Carl Anderson, Drunken PrayerPUP et al.

#2: Dawn Richard, “Blackheart”

We got a bit deeper than the usual on our second installment of our weekly Spotify playlists. Panda Bear and Justin Townes Earle make it to the list again with two new songs, but it’s Dawn Richard who steals the show with two songs off her new record, Blackheart. Brand new songs from singer-songwriters whose new albums were just announced (Waxahatchee and Matthew E. White) also make the list; and please don’t miss on the magnificent treatment country singer Lee Ann Womack gave to ol’ Uncle Neil’s classic Out On The Weekend. And please give the new Siskiyou a spin – their new album Nervous just came out on the superb Constellation (GY!BE, Silver Mt Zion, Matana Roberts, Vic Chesnutt, etc etc etc – you didn’t even need me to point that out to you) and it’s both amazing and available on Spotify.

Optimus Primavera Sound 2012: day 3

Oh, festivals on rainy days. Such a pleasure for absolutely no one. Everyone loves guest appearances in festivals, but would invite such an inconvenient entity? My one and only guess is “students who couldn’t attend the festival due to having to study for exams”. You made little girls cry, are you happy now?
