Hard Club, Porto, June 22nd 2014<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have to start this review by stating that I only went to see <strong>Kylesa<\/strong> for old times\u2019 sake, having heard absolutely nothing they\u2019ve released after 2006\u2019s excellent\u00a0<em>Time Will Fuse Its Worth<\/em>,\u00a0back then when I used to think The Mars Volta was the best band on Earth and spent too much time &#8211; that I will never ever ever ever get back &#8211; listening to Tool records.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The setlist was centered around their latest three records &#8211; their last concert in Portugal was two years ago, before they released their latest album, 2013\u2019s <em>Ultraviolet &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>and, unfortunately,\u00a0&#8220;Hollow Severer&#8221; was the only throwback to those good ol\u2019 times and, by far, the highlight of the concert for me.\u00a0Phillip Cope\u2019s shouts sound cruder than ever and\u00a0the band proved to be much more effective when the male vocals prevailed &#8211; when treading softer ground with Laura Pleasant\u2019s <em>pleasant<\/em> but mellower\u00a0voice, Kylesa sounded more like a neutered cat than the sabertooth tiger we all know they can be.<\/p>\n<div><strong>Lazer\/Wulf<\/strong> opened the night with their brand of bland, noneffective heavy math rock. Presenting their yet-to-be-released LP\u00a0<em>The Beast of Left and Right <\/em>(available next month on Kylesa\u2019s own\u00a0Retro Futurist label), the Georgians promptly threatened to give us all an headache that fortunately was cast aside by Slimani\u2019s goal against South Korea, which was probably the best thing that happened during that half hour.
