Starting next week, our beloved friends at Coronado<\/a> will be going around Europe for a nice end-of-summer vacation. Well, not all of them, only the ones that matter, meaning math rock juggernauts Equations<\/strong> and post-rock-in-2013 stalwarts SAUR<\/strong>. And because SAUR live near me, I spoke to them about what Europe can expect from them. Which is not much. I\u2019m kidding: if you live anywhere near these places, go check them out so you can tell your hipster friends yeah, currently I\u2019m checking out the portuguese scene, Awesome Tapes From Africa got too mainstream.<\/em><\/p>\n

How did this all start?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Henrique Gon\u00e7alves:<\/strong>\u00a0Last year, Equations were supposedto go with Suchi Rukara on tour, but they had to cancel due to some family issues, I can\u2019t remember very well\u2026 They were going to book it for\u00a0Easter. I was at home with G.D., V.T and Z\u00e9 Pedro [Equations] – or something like that – and they were talking about it. Then I said, \u201cOh yeah? So let\u2019s book it together!\u201d.<\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t that disrespectful to Suchi Rukara?
\n<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G.:<\/strong> No, because they can\u2019t! They have important things to do! [laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

And you clearly don\u2019t\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong>\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]\u00a0Yeah, clearly!<\/p>\n

How will you reconcile your first days of college with this little trip of yours through Europe?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Andr\u00e9 Palma:<\/strong> How will I? I won\u2019t. [laughs<\/em>] Teleportation\u00a0hasn\u2019t been invented yet\u2026<\/p>\n

You can do it through Skype\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

A.P<\/strong>: There\u2019s no roaming, man! It\u2019s very expensive abroad!<\/p>\n

Did you choose the countries you\u2019re going to play in or did it just happened?<\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> It was a bit of both\u2026 First we chose, then we began to cross out those that didn\u2019t want us. Then we started to just request them all\u2026<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> Yeah\u2026 At a certain point we were so desperate that we started sending out E-mails to every place, hoping for an answer. And this tour was the one that was possible for us to make. If it is the ideal<\/em> tour? Well, it\u2019s not\u2026 But when you don\u2019t have anyone behind you booking\u00a0you a gig, you have to submit yourself to the ones that might appear.<\/p>\n

Monetarily speaking, will it be worth it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G: <\/strong>No.<\/p>\n

No?<\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> No. We are going on a holiday, we\u2019re going to spend money! [laughs<\/em>]\u00a0This is like an InterRail! Can we still do an InterRail at our age?<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> Yeah, you can do it until you\u2019re thirty. And there\u2019s already the senior option\u2026 You can be sixty years old and still do an InterRail!\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]\u00a0But we never thought of this tour as a way to make money. We are not prepared to get into that kind of world.<\/p>\n

Is it a D.I.Y. <\/strong>thing, like Black Flag<\/strong>? <\/strong>Are you prepared to sleep <\/strong>on<\/strong> the floor?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> Everywhere!<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ll always have two people sleeping in the van so that our gear doesn\u2019t get stolen.\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> This weekend I need to go to Decathlon to buy a sleeping bag, because I have this feeling that I\u2019m going to sleep very badly\u2026<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the probability that the driver gets arrested for driving completely drunk under the influence of Gin da Morte?<\/strong>
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong>\u00a0I don\u2019t know\u2026 Among nine dudes there must be one that might be sober enough to drive\u2026<\/p>\n

Considering that five of them play in Equations<\/strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong>\u00a0Equations? The guys at Equations\u00a0are pussies.\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

Equations\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0bass player did a tattoo at home, I don\u2019t know if we can call them pussies\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> But that\u2019s Z\u00e9z\u00e9\u2026 anyway,\u00a0we\u2019ll sleep where we are playing or nearby, so, in the morning, everybody will be already sober. I hope\u2026<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> We need to preserve our sense of responsability.<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> And if we mess up the van, we\u2019ll have to pay for it, so\u2026\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> We cannot act like dumbasses.
\n<\/u><\/p>\n

Is the\u00a0<\/strong>Red-Light District<\/strong>the main reason why you\u2019re playing in Holland?<\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> [laughs<\/em>]\u00a0No, because we aren\u2019t even going to Amsterdam\u2026<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> We\u2019re not?!<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> No, we aren\u2019t\u2026<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong>\u00a0But we can always have a day off\u2026<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong>\u00a0I don\u2019t know if we\u2019ll have the time to do that.<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> Me neither\u2026 supposedly, we\u2019re heading to Paris on the 30th.<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> Basically Andr\u00e9 just wants to go to Amsterdam.<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong>\u00a0And Budapest! I\u2019d love to go there again.<\/p>\n

Are you going to play any new songs?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> Our set is going to be very similar to the ones that we\u2019ve been playing, but we should at least play one new song, to check out how it works live.<\/p>\n

How is the new record coming along?<\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> Almost done.<\/p>\n

Is \u201calmost done\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0for real or that\u2019s just an euphemism?<\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> We\u2019d like to finish it by the beginning of the next year\u2026<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> In the meantime, Lu\u00eds is going to be operated on his wrist. But we\u2019ll keep on composing, and when he recovers he\u2019ll finish his part. Now, as he is going to record with Lydia\u2019s Sleep,\u00a0it becomes more complicated when it comes to timing\u2026 and there\u2019s also other parallel activities, like studying. It\u2019s difficult to reconcile everything.<\/p>\n

Do you expect to become more known with this tour?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> The other day we were talking with Ricardo and Iuri, who have already made nine, ten, eleven tours, I don\u2019t know, and they said to me something I can\u2019t forget: that a band who can resist a tour is able to resist everything. I want people to know that we are doing this in a very personal way, but\u2026 I kinda hope more that this experience will help us grow as a band, and I don\u2019t believe that this will be a major thing, but yeah\u2026 we will probably get ourselves some contacts and know people related to this business outside of the country, and we hope that this tour will not be the first and the last\u2026 We want it to be the first of several.<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> And – I think it was Bernardo Beja who said this – if a guy likes our band just because of one concert, it\u2019s already great. Then he might show us to a friend – that might also like it – and if that friend has like ten friends, two of them might like us as well\u2026 which makes approximately forty or fifty people in Europe liking our band, so\u2026<\/p>\n

Among the nine guys that are going, who do you think is more likely to get lost in some city?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> Z\u00e9z\u00e9.\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]\u00a0At least ask me something difficult\u2026 If you ask me a question I can answer in about three seconds – or less than three seconds, microseconds!\u2026\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

Are you afraid Z\u00e9z\u00e9 might be the biggest star <\/strong>in<\/strong> this tour? Surrounded by all the girls and with all the boys asking him for an autograph?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A.P: <\/strong>There\u2019s no doubt that\u2019ll happen! Why would I be afraid? We all are beautiful guys!\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> But I imagine Bruno, at the end of the third or fourth day, tired of everyone, going into some street fight and ending up in some police station\u2026<\/p>\n

How many Smiths\u2019 covers are going to be played on this tour?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong>\u00a0Maybe two\u2026 How Soon Is Now?<\/em> and This Charming Man<\/em>.I bet on these. We planned that the other day. I\u2019ll send an E-mail to Am\u00edlcar\u2026 Nah, we\u2019re not going to play any covers.\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> I won\u2019t play any more covers! [laughs<\/em>]. Since that one that we played\u2026<\/p>\n

But that one was phenomenal.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A.P<\/strong>: Which one?<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> Oh, but it\u2019s not that one.<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> It was the one by Phil Collins\u2026<\/p>\n

Do you think I remember?<\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> That came out a bit bad, because\u2026 Well, at first, because we put V.T. and Z\u00e9 Pedro singing, which was maybe a casting mistake. But we love them, we love them\u2026\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> Casting mistake? A casting mistake was the fact that it was poorly played\u2026\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> Yeah, we couldn\u2019t hear\u2026<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> We had some technical problems.<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> And Jo\u00e3o won\u2019t let us play any more covers, basically\u2026 he doesn\u2019t allow us.\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> But the concept of a cover song\u2026 Normally our covers\u2019 repertoire is more associated to events like Coronado parties. I don\u2019t have that idea of playing covers on our own shows, you see? It was a thing that was associated to Coronado\u2026 some sort of extra contribution to a party that belongs to all of us. It\u2019s nothing that we might include in a set. At least in my mind.<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> If it were up to me and Lu\u00eds, we\u2019d only play covers.\u00a0[laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n

Do you hate your band\u2019s songs that much?<\/strong><\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> Nah, I\u2019m just kidding.<\/p>\n

A.P:<\/strong> But we should do a record consisting only of cover songs.<\/p>\n

H.G:<\/strong> Yeah, that\u2019s planned\u2026<\/p>\n

When will you book a date in Scotland to meet <\/strong>Mogwai<\/strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n
