A typical characteristic of a list like this &#8211; composed of the individual lists of some people whose music tastes I enjoy enough to ask them to contribute to the blog &#8211; is a certain conservatism (although there are some newcomers ranking pretty high, like Hundred Waters, Purity Ring, alt-J or Point Reyes) with some albums that manage to sneak into the top 10 despite not being the artists\u2019 top moments (GY!BE, Spiritualized, Andrew Bird). Black Emperor<\/strong>, <em>\u2018Allelujah! Don\u2019t Bend! Ascend!<\/em> [Constellation]<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian powerhouse unexpectedly and <em>finally<\/em> released their first album since 2002&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Yanqui U.X.O\u00a0<\/em>and they didn\u2019t disappoint: how could the studio versions of classic unreleased tracks like \u201cAlbanian\u201d (now \u201cMladic\u201d) and \u201cGamelan\u201d (\u201cWe Drift Like Worried Fire\u201d) be bad? Probably not their best effort ever, but a solid one. &#8211; DSS<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.minus.com\/iU9kRGzYhnFWy.jpg\" alt=\"image\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>Andrew Bird<\/strong>, <em>Break It Yourself<\/em> [Bella Union \/ Mom &amp; Pop]<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Bird\u2019s albums are always a very enjoyable listen and this one is no different. It may not be his best, nor as popular as the formers <em>Noble Beast <\/em>and <em>Armchair Apocrypha<\/em>, only there is definitely something about <em>Break It Yourself <\/em>that makes it special on its own<em>. <\/em>And although Bird has got us used to a high standard, we are still surprised by the thought provoking lyrics and enthralled by the intricate multi-layered soundscapes. Yet there is still room for the whistling, consistent smart pop songs amidst the singer-songwriter maturing introspection. Add that to the lovely voice of Annie Clark (St. Vincent)and you\u2019ll get a beautiful, charming album.\u00a0&#8211; SMF<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.minus.com\/i5Em0ZZYJI09s.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>Bill Fay<\/strong>, <em>Life is People<\/em> [Dead Oceans]<\/p>\n<p>Thank you David Tibet for letting me know about Bill Fay [via Current 93\u2019s version of \u201cTime of the Last Persecution\u201d]. Thank you Jeff Tweedy for helping bring Bill Fay\u2019s music to the masses [via playing \u201cBe Not So Fearful\u201d on stage]. Those two individuals that happen to be two of my favorite artists alive (top 5 material), along with the precious help of one of my favorite labels (Dead Oceans) made it sure that Fay would be back to recording music and releasing a proper solo album since 1971&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Time of the Last Persecution<\/em>. <em>Life is People<\/em> isn\u2019t just one of the best albums of the year &#8211; it\u2019s the comeback of the year, and only time will tell if it will rank among the best albums of the decade, but I bet my entire music collection (I\u2019m talking CDs and vinyl, not my external HDD) that people will still be amazed by \u201cNever Ending Happening\u201d or the life-changer\u00a0&#8220;Be At Peace With Yourself&#8221;\u00a0ten, twenty years from now. &#8211; DSS<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.minus.com\/ibyRsKzwdl7FI8.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>Fiona Apple<\/strong>, <em>The Idler Wheel\u2026<\/em>\u00a0[Epic]<\/p>\n<p>What an uncanny career is ms. Fiona\u2019s. Starting big, with her commercial breakthrough album \u201cTidal\u201d back in 1996, the promise of an Alicia Keys\u2019-like\u00a0sucessful pop jazz star soon was broken. This problematic skinny piano diva gained the chutzpah of releasing a provocative following album, most known as that album with the longest title ever, instead of following a single-friendly path. And guess what? She was getting somewhere musically. The follower only came by the year 2005(!), <em>Extraordinary Machine<\/em>, and suddenly here we are, 2012 and waiting for what would be her fourth(!!!) album in already a sixteen-year career. I mean, hugest expectation on a fourth release? Probably and deserved. Fiona got minimal and planted a basic piano, drums and contrabass set, resulting in some limpidly raw songwriting, ambulating between anti-folk and jazz\/pop ballads. And her voice, god, it aged stupendously. Heck, even the lyrics, this is the class level on post-break-up songs, and I\u2019m not even much of a lyrics guy. \u201cLeft Alone\u201d is the riff winner (the finnisher loop-sectioner \u201cHot Knife\u201d is swag nevertheless), \u201cWerewolf\u201d the love song winner, and the rest gets pretty close to both the awards. Apple\u2019s peak moment? I dare to negate, let\u2019s quietly wait for another chapter in this outstanding discography. &#8211; BSC<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.minus.com\/i9gwu1DHf4siQ.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6. <strong>Calexico<\/strong>, <em>Algiers<\/em>\u00a0[Anti- \/ City Slang]<\/p>\n<p>Another solid release &#8211; from start to finish &#8211; from a band who can do no wrong. \u201cEpic\u201d, \u201cPara\u201d and \u201cPuerto\u201d are all masterpieces. Do I really need to describe their music here? Yes, it\u2019s more of the same: there are Mexican-inspired horns everywhere, Spanish lyrics here and there, and just awesome songwriting from Burns, Convertino &amp; co. all around. I\u2019ll focus on other stuff then: be sure to grab the 2CD edition that includes a live CD called Spiritoso. If you don\u2019t know Calexico is even better live, we suggest you try and get all their live albums, bootlegs, everything you manage to get your hands on, including a ticket to actually see them in concert. They\u2019ll be playing the Portuguese music festival <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paredesdecoura.com\/2012\/index2013.php\">Paredes de Coura<\/a> on August 17. Do you really need a better reason to finally visit (or come back to) Portugal and its best festival? &#8211; DSS<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.minus.com\/ibvXKzrkgNOJqW.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Matt Elliott<\/strong>, <em>The Broken Man\u00a0<\/em>[Ici d&#8217;Ailleurs]<\/p>\n<p>No one manages to capture the essence of human life (with an emphasis on failure and despair) these days like Matt Elliott. Judging from the raving reviews from hip and not-so-hip web and magazines, <em>The Broken Man<\/em>\u00a0is probably his most successful album to date and we can only hope it draws attention to his back catalogue, both as Matt Elliott and as The Third Eye Foundation. If the monumental live rendition of \u201cDust Flesh and Bones\u201d on his concert in Aveiro last May was surely one of the moments of the year for those who had the luck of attending the show, imagine how the organizers of the concert must have felt. (We\u2019re talking about ourselves, of course). &#8211; DSS<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.minus.com\/iqam25b8i3SD7.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Spiritualized<\/strong>, <em>Sweet Heart, Sweet Light<\/em>\u00a0[Fat Possum \/ Double Six]<\/p>\n<p>Along with Andrew Bird\u2019s album, this is probably the biggest surprise among the top 10.\u00a0<em>Sweet Heart Sweet Light<\/em>\u00a0surely doesn\u2019t fare as one of the best records Jason Pierce has ever released. But hey: how can a Spiritualized album be bad? I have two theories about the high spot of their latest album in this list: a) 2012 was really shitty or b) being a Spiritualized fan is imperative for anyone willing to belong to the Bolachas team. &#8211; DSS<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.minus.com\/ibkeJ1mvWh6jSo.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Damien Jurado<\/strong>, <em>Maraqopa\u00a0<\/em>[Secretly Canadian]<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Jurado has been writing increasingly good songs (and albums) since the early 90s. Most songwriters would have probably passed their creative peak 20 years after the start of their careers; this isn\u2019t the case. \u201cMuseum of Flight\u201d and \u201cWorking Titles\u201d are among his greatest songs, and Jurado knew that keeping Richard Swift as the producer after the amazing <em>Saint Bartlett<\/em>\u00a0would only work in his favor, giving his songs a whole new dimension. There\u2019s a tear in my eye every time I try and imagine how good Damien Jurado will be when his peak comes. &#8211; DSS<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.minus.com\/iu1m1ksfheRgz.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Father John Misty<\/strong>, <em>Fear Fun<\/em>\u00a0[Sub Pop]<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s admit it: Joshua Tillman\u2019s past solo albums (as J. Tillman) were just plain boring and I\u2019d laugh at anyone who said he would be the new Jason Molina. Most people gave his solo albums a chance because he was a drummer for the Fleet Foxes, and not because the records were\u00a0that\u00a0good. Fortunately for all of us, Tillman decided put his past behind him, quit Fleet Foxes and turned into this almighty creature named Father John Misty, a witty entertainer born and raised in Laurel Canyon who can\u2019t write a bad song. Our team couldn\u2019t decide which of the 12 songs on Fear Fun\u00a0is the best &#8211; each one of us has a favorite song &#8211; which generally means an album is top 3 material. It <em>is<\/em>. &#8211; DSS<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.minus.com\/ictFwG5yN2HSl.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Sharon Van Etten<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>Tramp<\/em>\u00a0[Jagjaguwar]<\/p>\n<p>At last, <em>Tramp\u00a0<\/em>brought SVE the recognition she deserved since the release of her excellent debut album,\u00a0<em>Because I Was in Love<\/em>. Special appearances by indie demi-gods Aaron Dessner (who also produced the album) and Zach Condon made sure her third album would be appealing to any indie rock fan and probably pissing off some of the purists who loved her acoustic guitar-based earlier work. Their loss: songwriting-wise,\u00a0<em>Tramp<\/em>\u00a0is as good as its predecessors, songs like \u201cAll I Can\u201d really benefit from the presence of a full fledged backing band and I\u2019m pretty sure this was the last tour she was playing shows for less than 1000 people.
