This is the soundtrack of the sunny days you’re missing out by staying at home playing partypoker for hours (kidding, it’s been raining for two days now even here in supposedly-sunny-Portugal and it feels good to stay at home for a while). Blonde Summer’s second EP Slow Daze couldn’t be more appropriate for this season, as the band name lets loose.

Just by seeing the album cover and the band-album name combo I bet you imagine what this sounds like: surf-rock influenced pop tunes, drenched in sunlight and washed out vocals to chill by the poolside to. Opening tracks “Slow Days Fast Company” and “Robots on Command” are the highlights here – great riff on the chorus of this latter, though it seems like we’ve seen this before.

What we didn’t see happening plenty of times though is a feel good hit of the summer that is able to live beyondthat specific summer is hard to find. I’m having a hard time believing this could be the case, but hey, there’s still one month left. Could we just get a little bit of warmth for what’s left of this lackluster “summer”?

Paredes de Coura Festival 2012 – the preview

My personal favorite festival Paredes de Coura is just ahead and we’re here to welcome it. Almost a landmark in Portugal, Paredes de Coura is turning twenty this year. And what a big boy it has become. From the likes of Sonic Youth, Arcade Fire, Dinosaur Jr., Queens of the Stone Age, Yo La Tengo, Mogwai, PJ Harvey, Pixies, Death from Above 1979, Morrissey, Bauhaus, The Cramps (and we could keep going), the shores of river Tabuão (that sets the perfect idyllic scenery) have seen it all. More than you probably will in your whole life.

Yet another video taken from one of the best Portuguese albums of 2012: Quack, by Nice Weather for Ducks. You can still download the record for free through Optimus Discos. Who knows, it could be your summer indie rock record.

Two Wounded Birds finally announced their (selftitled) debut LP, out next June 4/24 (Europe/US). We had already listened to the opening track “Together Forever”; now they’re offering a new song off it, “To Be Young”, available for streaming and download free download above. It’s exactly what you’d expect from a band who’ll release their record through Holiday Friends Recording Company, Jacob Graham from the Drums’ label. Classic pop with a big old school punk-like bassline. Summer’s saved.

Island Twins, “Creepaway”

Isn’t there an old movie where a pair of twins ends up on a deserted island and something incestuous happens? Lagoon something? Or am I confusing it with a very, VERY weird dream I had the other night? Eh. The Island Twins are a New York band who’ve just recently released their debut LP, aptly titled Island Twins (OMFG SO ORIGINAL), and they play fuzzy pop tunes designed to melt your heart away or at least make you sing along to them. It’s good, I swear. “Creepaway” is their latest single, and you can download it for free here.
