Cakes and Tapes alumni The Shilohs have just released their sophomore LP and you can stream the fuck out of it on their Bandcamp. You know you’ll always need some fresh and good pop rock music in your life, especially when considering Alex Chilton’s dead and there’s no more Big Star for you. Oh, and if you’re into Felt, please check track 10, “Down at the Bottom of Bottomland”. Amazing stuff. The Shilohs have spent some time on the road with Real Estate earlier this year and will present their selftitled album in the US and Canada opening for other indie pop geniuses The Fresh & Onlys next July. Sometimes I wish I didn’t live in Europe.

May 2014 at Mercado Negro, Aveiro

Ever wondered why we’re posting less and less stuff nowadays? Yes, we’ve been busing getting other things done. Like this all star lineup for a month of concerts at Mercado Negro, in Aveiro, Portugal. After a wonderful Old Jerusalem concert last week, tonight we host Matt Elliott yet again, this time with a new album. Next Wednesday we bring one of our favorite songwriters to Portugal for the first time ever: Will Stratton. Finally, on Friday 30, we welcome back Micah Blue Smaldone, who hasn’t played in Portugal in the last six years, and we’re also proud to present, for the first time in concert, his Fire on Fire and Cerebrus Shoal bandmate Tom Kovacevic, who has just released one of the most surprising albums of the year, Universe Thin as Skin, on Immune Recordings. More info and links in the Facebook event page.

Our friends at Pug Records have just started their new series of singles, Mutt Singles. The first one, Ciro Madd’s “You and Me” is now available for streaming on Soundcloud. A must for anyone who’s ever heard about Teenage Fanclub, we must say.
Renowned for travelling from sixties folk-psychedelic to eighties shoegaze, Ciro Madd has penned a baroque pop tune for the first issue. You and Me is a charming symphony of keyboards and vocals wrapped up in George Harrison-style riffs, recommended for fans of the Beach Boys and The Zombies.

Optimus Primavera Sound 2014: the unsung heroes, part I

A couple of weeks ago, while at the official presentation of Optimus Primavera Sound 2014’s full lineup at the Porto city hall, I was surprised to see a lot of people cheering uncontrollably whenever a band they liked appeared on the big screen. Seriously, when “The National” appeared printed on the jacket of one of the characters on the (great) short video that announced the festival’s lineup, I thought FC Porto had scored or something. Shouts of similar magnitude could be heard when Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Kendrick Lamar or Haim were announced, but a lot of names went unnoticed and are naturally confined to the last few lines of the lineup poster.

Fat Cat/Lefse has unveiled the track Spiritualized contributed with to the amazing Space Project (read more about it here) and it’s easily the best song Jason Pierce has done since 2001’s Let It Come Down. Note: this is coming from someone who played Songs in A&E obsessively for two months.
