We took a week off because we can. It gave us a few extra days to dive deeper into Snapped Ankles’ excellent “Forest of Your Problems”. The noisy London post-punk (if we can define it like that…) band refines their sound further, bringing us some hip-moving motorik we can use to pretend the world is back to normal and we can all dance again. Responsibly.
Guitar prodigy Julian Lage‘s debut on Blue Note, “Squint”, is our album of the week. Produced by Margaret Glaspy and Armand Hirsch, Lage enlists bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King in this eleven-song voyage.
Sven Wunder’s third album in three years is out now on Mr Bongo. After exploring 70s Anatolian rock and Japanese min’yō in his last two fusion jazzy tomes, “Natura Morta” draws from still life paintings and its relationship with nature.
Michelle Zauner’s first two albums as Japanese Breakfast sounded promising, but not really that exciting – not that it aimed at that. But, as soon as the horns in “Paprika” kick in, you can’t help but feel this *is* the breakout album we were waiting for from a stellar songwriter. Ironically enough, it was the inward-looking, gorgeous slow burner album closer “Posing for Cars” that made us pick “Jubilee” as our album of the week. Go get it.
black midi is making prog and avant-jazz palatable for the kids. Makes us want to put a hat on just to tip it. Their second album, “Cavalcade”, is our record of the week. Of course it is.
