Marisa Anderson and William Tyler‘s collaborative album, “Lost Futures”, has some of our favourite melodies of the year. The idea of “duelling guitars” has given us some enticing music over the years, but the duo’s music shines brighter when those guitars – both electric and acoustic – sound like they’re just sweetly talking to each other.
black midi is making prog and avant-jazz palatable for the kids. Makes us want to put a hat on just to tip it. Their second album, “Cavalcade”, is our record of the week. Of course it is.
It’s not common for a reunion to last longer than the original run of a band. Also uncommon for the reunion-era records to be as consistently good as Dinosaur Jr.‘s. Produced by Kurt Vile, “Sweep It Into Space” is the band’s twelfth LP and the fifth since 2005’s original lineup reunion. It sees the band mostly exploring its melodic side without straying much from the typical Dino Jr sound – exactly what we all want from them.
After a small break to record some music in the folky “superband” (we’re guilty, but can we all please forget this concept?) Bonny Light Horseman, Eric D. Johnson celebrates 20 years of Fruit Bats with a brand new record. “The Pet Parade” shows Johnson, one of the best melody crafters of the game, at his most dreamy and contemplative so far.
