Check this out, a best of 2012 list that actually wasn’t posted until the year ended! A typical characteristic of a list like this – composed of the individual lists of some people whose music tastes I enjoy enough to ask them to contribute to the blog – is a certain conservatism (although there are some newcomers ranking pretty high, like Hundred Waters, Purity Ring, alt-J or Point Reyes) with some albums that manage to sneak into the top 10 despite not being the artists’ top moments (GY!BE, Spiritualized, Andrew Bird). Sharon Van Etten’s Tramp will be reissued in a 2xCD deluxe edition next November 13. The package includes a bonus CD with demo versions of the songs from the album. Thank God I still haven’t bought it – she plays in Guimarães at the Optimus Primavera Club festival on November 30 and perhaps I’ll get it there. Here’s a demo of an unreleased song you probably knew about if you’ve seen her 2010 KEXP session, “Tell Me”.

yvynyl brings us today a brand new track from Emmett Kelly (AKA The Cairo Gang). I’ve been following his work since I saw him playing with Bonnie “Prince” Billy a couple of years ago here in town, and judging by this new song we might have a gem of an album waiting for us next October 23rd.
The Cairo Gang – Now You Are One of Us
Emmett Kelly is a man about town. He’s played on every recent Bonnie “Prince” Billy record, engineered, produced, and performed as the entire backing band on the new Angel Olsen album, and been “heavily involved” in dozens of other projects in the weird folk scene. He’s a man who loves music with every fiber of his being, and that comes through on tracks like this. Oh my god that guitar flourish cuts me deep.

Americana act These United States released their a video for their song “Maps” off their fifth, selftitled album released earlier this year. Maxwell Sorensen did it and I thought you should also know more about the amazing album artwork, done by Todd Roeth. Here.
