#267: Black Country, New Road, “For the first time”

Black Country, New Road was supposed to have exploded all over Europe in 2020, but the world had different plans for them. The hype created by a band with two released songs to their name was unusual, but it had roots on their explosive live shows that some of us were fortunate to witness before all of this crashed down. Dubbed (by themselves) the world’s second best Slint tribute act, the London post-punk-ish septet sounds like nothing we’ve heard recently, except maybe their peers Black Midi (probably the best Slint tribute act, who knows). Here’s a band whose entire first record managed to find its way into our playlist. Enjoy.

Aaron Frazer is best known as the drummer (and singer) for soul outfit Durand Jones & the Indications. Like so many songwriters in the past few years, he teamed up with the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and got his debut solo album, “Introducing…”, ready in no time. We’re not even halfway through January and we already have our first highlight of 2021. Feels good to be back.

As the year draws to a close and the days become darker, so does our playlist. Or maybe it’s just the moody influence of our album of the week, Christian Kjellvander‘s About Love and Loving Again. Namedropping is cheating, but the veteran – although not that well-known outside of Scandinavia – Swedish singer-songwriter might be up your alley if you’re into some not so strange mix between Nick Cave and Jason Molina with a post-rocky Americana vibe.

Our album of the week was released in April. Confused? Well, thank Record Store Day for that. WARMER, Jeff Tweedy’s companion album to both last year’s excellent WARM and his autobiography, was previously only released through a very limited vinyl run, but is now available on all streaming platforms and as WARM/WARMER pack. Far from being a compilation of b-sides, some of the tracks on this collection of songs are as strong as the best songs off his proper solo debut.

And, because this week is the last before we go on our typical vacation around the Festival Vodafone Paredes de Coura – more about it next week – we have packed this playlist with two hours of new music. #177: Julia Jacklin, “Crushing”

We knew from the first couple of singles that Julia Jacklin’s new album would be at least almost as good as her debut. We also know she never wrote a bad song, so a disappointment sounded very unlikely. Still, we weren’t prepared for how great it really is – and we’re so goddamn lucky she’s playing Festival Vodafone Paredes de Coura next August. See you all there.
