a BOLACHAS.ORG premiere

Southern Portuguese singer-songwriter Mandrax Icon will finally release his debut LP on vinyl, Mary Climbed the Ladder for the Sun, this summer on his own label, Nostril Records. There’s no definitive release date yet, but this thing we know: Cakes and Tapes will be joining the party, releasing 33 copies of it on cassette. That’s how much I love this.

While we all wait for it, I’m proud to present you my fav track from the album, also named “Mary Climbed the Ladder for the Sun”, probably the best album/song name released this year. Kinda reminds me of 2010’s best one, Swans’ My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky. Luckily for all of us, the song is even more amazing than the title itself; sprawling over almost six minutes, we get a certain The Tallest Man on Earth feel due to the finger-picked guitar (his major influences also include legendary guitar players like John Fahey or Jack Rose, so you know he gets things right). Love it when the hammond (played by guest Silas Ferreira, from Os Pontos Negros) kicks in at 1:18. You all should know by know that a hammond is strictly necessary to turn a good song into a great song, right?

James Apollo performing “Big Dipper” for my absolute favorite radio station KEXP from Seattle. I wish we had radio stations like this in Portugal. Produced by songwriting monster Damien Jurado, Apollo’s new EP Little War, Little Less sees the light of day next June 4th via Cakes and Tapes (pre-order info coming soon) and his very own imprint Marterry Music. Watch the whole KEXP session here.

Horrible present, haunted past.

If you run a somewhat high profile site/blog you surely receive dozens of emails per week. Some you don’t even bother to read and throw them in the garbage bin just after reading the headline (sorry), you might find others slightly interesting but not enough to post or there’s not enough time to do it, others contain some great, perfectly bloggable music inside and then there’s this rare sight: a sincere email where only a ten word sentence is written, alongside with a Soundcloud/Bandcamp link pointing to an awesome song performed by some perfectly unknown unsigned artist. This is the kind of email that made me want to start my own label, and this was the case with Horrible Present. “Classics at Night” was instantly gone into repeat mode and a couple of months later his exquisitely titled EP 54, I love you but it’s time to get off – which consists of his old EP 54 plus some new songs and b-sides – was released on our label Cakes and Tapes. Stream, download for free and buy one of the 15 remaining limited edition cassettes by clicking on the widget below.

BOLACHAS PREMIERE: Point Reyes, “Buildings”

To get Brooklyn band POINT REYES off the ground, Asa Horvitz suggested that percussionist Kyle Farrell and cellist Daniel Bindschedler join him in Warsaw, Poland (where he was working supported by a Fulbright grant) to spend four months writing, rehearsing, and giving concerts in a completely foreign environment. Farrell and Bindschedler jumped at the opportunity and in May 2011 the trio moved into a sunny attic loft across from the Vistula river. Throughout the summer of 2011, POINT REYES immersed themselves in Poland: they performed in towns where no Americans had performed before, rehearsed ten hours a day in the basement of the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music, studied Polish, swam in flooded meadows, became obsessed with Communist architecture, played festivals in Krakow and Berlin, collaborated with Polish musicians and theater artists, and wrote and recorded their debut full length album. The project was funded in part by the Fulbright grant awarded to Horvitz. POINT REYES’ debut album is the culmination of their time in Poland. It will be released on CAKES AND TAPES (Portugal) in January 2012.

I’m so glad I’m able to work with talented people like this trio. For you, here’s BUILDINGS. Free streaming and download below. WARSZAWA is out tomorrow, January 12th 2012.
