Tomorrow they’ll embark on a journey through the US, starting in Austin where they’ll play several SXSW showcases, followed by a small east coast tour. If you’re one of the lucky ones who got to see Jacob Faurholt live in Portugal earlier this year, you might be wondering what’s he up to these days. The good news is that he’s releasing a brand new EP, Geek Love is the Best Love – actually a Thurston Moore quote from his show Jacob attended in Guimarães, Portugal – next Monday on his own label Raw Onion Records. Expect a tape release soon. The great news is that you can already listen and download (for free) the six-track EP on his Bandcamp. Some of those songs were written while on tour through the westernmost part of the Iberian Peninsula. Probably in my own living room. I’d be really proud if someone got the inspiration to write such a song like “Guided by Voices” or “Northern Lights” while sitting on my couch. Wouldn’t you?

There’s so much to love about my favorite Greek band, Plastic Flowers. After releasing two EPs on our Cakes and Tapes, the always shape-shifting ambient pop duo has just put out a new single, “Empty Eyes”, through Bad Panda Records. “Empty Eyes” showcases their poppier side, which could and should be more explored by them on future releases.
Natural Conspiracy is still available for download on a pay-what-you-want basis at Bandcamp, and there’s a limited number of green cassettes still available for purchase as well. Grab it below.

Cakes and Tapes veterans The Shilohs are bound to release a brand new 7" on Matt Mondanile’s (Ducktails, Real Estate) label New Images. Pitchfork has just premiered the title track and this guitar sound fits so good on my Destroyer’s Rubies’-filled afternoon. (No wonder, since this has been recorded at the same studios in Vancouver.)

Meridians is Julie Napolin (Citay) and Trevor Healy (Cakes of Light). Their open-form ballads are alternately driving and hypnotic, exploring the overtones, dissonances, and consonances created by voice, electronics, and guitars. Julie currently plays solo under the Meridians moniker, performing live with tape drones and guitarists such as David First (Notekillers) and Tom Carter (Charalambides).
The unreleased tracks in the Meridians self-titled LP set were co-written and recorded in 2008-2009 by Julie and Trevor. It was recorded with Tim Green (The Fucking Champs/Nation of Ulysses) in San Francisco. There are echoes of British folk, minimalism and the more cinematic strains of krautrock as the two combine intricate electric and 12-string guitar melodies over pulsing loops of flute, violin, found objects and oscillators.
