#249: Daniel Romano’s Outfit, “How Ill Thy World Is Ordered”

Bolachas Now Playing, a new music Spotify playlist, updated every Wednesday.

If every album Daniel Romano has released in 2020 was on Spotify, it’s very possible that you would have seen his face in this playlist at least three or four more times. “How Ill Thy World is Ordered”, an album credited to his Outfit, is Romano’s 10th release of the year (ninth? eleventh? We lost track) and probably the best of the bunch. If you want to see someone going from acoustic Dylan to Parsons to Vega to Springsteen to Richman to electric Dylan and simultaneously always sounding as unique as he is, here’s an album for you. Then check his Bandcamp for hours of excellent new music, from proggy jams with Tool’s Danny Carey to traditional country tunes. Daniel Romano is the hottest artist in contemporary rock and roll music.

#247: Colter Wall, “Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs”

Bolachas Now Playing, a new music Spotify playlist, updated every Wednesday.

One of the greatest mysteries of contemporary western music is how on earth can a Canadian in his early 20s so easily pass for a veteran country troubadour from another time. That sounds natural for Colter Wall, and he’s here to stay. Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs is his third album in four years, and probably the easiest to get into.

#246: Bright Eyes, “Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was”

Bolachas Now Playing, a new music Spotify playlist, updated every Wednesday.

While 2020 has certainly been a shitshow of a year, we could only have hoped Bright Eyes‘ first record in almost a decade would have saved it. We weren’t wrong to hope. The brilliance that is “Down In The Weeds Where The World Once Was” is here and please excuse us while we take the rest of the year off to plunge into this sturdy pool of sadness, death and divorce.
