As you probably noticed already by our playlists, we’re big fans of the New Orleans country scene and its retro-y sound. One of its rising stars is singer-songwriter Esther Rose, whose third album, “How Many Times”, is out now.
Michael Feuerstack is a living legend of the Canadian underground. Between his work as Snailhouse and in his own name, “Harmonize the Moon” is his thirteenth LP. Its ten songs, drifting between classic folk and soft indie rock, are the perfect soundtrack to welcome Spring, if that’s a thing where you live.

#271: Azita, “Glen Echo”
We haven’t heard of AZITA Youssefi for a while, until one day we get the news that the Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist has collaborated with Drag City labelmates Bill Callahan and Bonnie “Prince” Billy on a cover of “Blackness of the Night”. There, she played all the instruments and did all the arrangements, just like on her first album in nine years, “Glen Echo”, which also serves as a great introduction to her world of song. Enjoy it, and make sure you dig deeper into her discography later.
After a small break to record some music in the folky “superband” (we’re guilty, but can we all please forget this concept?) Bonny Light Horseman, Eric D. Johnson celebrates 20 years of Fruit Bats with a brand new record. “The Pet Parade” shows Johnson, one of the best melody crafters of the game, at his most dreamy and contemplative so far.
Seems like Nick Cave has had enough of being quiet. The standout track of CARNAGE, his new LP with long-time collaborator Warren Ellis, has to be “White Elephant”. Halfway through the menacing sounding song, the whole thing turns into a full fledged gospel hymn and we’re left wondering whether Jason Pierce is pulling the strings behind the scenes. It was then we knew it would be fairly easy to pick our album of the week.
