Wilco’s eleventh full length is probably their most inspired since insert the name of your favorite Wilco record here. After two less remarkable albums and a small hiatus, they’re back with an album that may sound quieter because we’re really supposed to focus on Jeff Tweedy’s superior songwriting and Glenn Kotche’s exquisite drumming style, the stars of this show. It’s a pleasure to be living in the same timeline as Wilco.
Plus: new tracks by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Angel Olsen, Johanna Warren, Lightning Dust, Big Thief, Kacy & Clayton, Marinho, Carla dal Forno, Kelsey Waldon, Colter Wall, The Avett Brothers, Craig Finn, Mikal Cronin, The Growlers, Altın Gün, Chromatics, Land of kush, The Messthetics, and Penguin Cafe.
The first September 2019 playlist brings you the very #bolachascore Esther Rose on the occasion of her second album, “You Made It This Far”. The New Orleans-based songwriter has just released – via Father/Daughter Records – one of our favorite country-tinged folk records of the year, and we can’t wait for you to fall in love with it (and for Rose and her band to cross over the ocean). Plus: new tracks by Vetiver, (Sandy) Alex G, Whitney, Black Belt Eagle Scout, Jay Som, Joan Shelley, Cross Record, Tom Brosseau, Red River Dialect, Patty Griffin, Simone White, Lana Del Rey, Kelsey Waldon, Ainsley Farrell, Paul Cauthen, The Devil Makes Three, Comet Gain, Have a Nice Life, Jason Lytle, Lightning Bolt, Fontaines D.C., and Pinegrove.
Eleven years after the Silver Jews’ swan song “Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea”, David Berman finally resurfaces as Purple Mountains. And the new record is everything we ever wanted and more, with members of Woods as their backing band and producers adding extra catchiness to Berman’s superior songwriting. It jumps straight to the top of our list of favorite albums of the year.
Plus: new tracks by Divino Niño, B Boys, Tijuana Panthers, Drab Majesty, Kyle Craft, Lower Dens, Gruff Rhys, Jenny Hval, Carnivorous Plant Society, Sandro Perri, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Bad Heaven Limited, Olympia, Jade Jackson, Michaela Anne, Eilen Jewell, Kelsey Waldon, Emma Russack, Erin Durant, Asia, and Joanna Sternberg.
We’re back for the high season and this week’s playlist is a double playlist – that means we couldn’t put together a 14-16 song playlist like we do every week or two weeks, but we did a 2h+ playlist with 30 of our favorite tunes from the past weeks, starting with the surprisingly motorik new Lambchop 18min tune and visiting new albums by Angel Olsen (pictured above), Big Thief, Kelsey Waldon, Carl Broemel, BJ Barham, or Cass McCombs. Plenty of our favorite singer-songwriters are featured here, so if that’s what you’re looking for, this is your lucky day.
