#212: Twain, “Adventure”
Twain has just released their new album, “Adventure”. Physical copies will only be out next year through our beloved Keeled Scales, but you can listen to its nine new tunes right now, just in time for winter. “Rare Feeling” was one of our favourite song-oriented albums of the latter half of the 10s. It is in great company now. Our last new music playlist of 2019 also features tracks by Sam Sanford, Toby Hay, Benjamin Tod, Soccer Mommy, The Secret Sisters, The String Cheese Incident, Luke Lalonde, The Hanging Stars, Roger Harvey, Hollow Ship, Les Big Byrd, Ondness, Action Bronson, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, Coldplay, El Khat, The Good Ones, Adam Green, Bombay Bicycle club, and Scott & Charlene’s Wedding.
As we approach 2018’s twilight and the first few publications start posting their best of the year lists, we decide to keep focusing on brand new music for a few more weeks. This week, we highlight State Champion’s new LP, ‘Send Flowers’. We’ll let the Silver Jews’ David Berman (we miss you, come back) make the introductions: “If Bob Dylan was funny, if Tom Waits was relevant, Ryan might not be peerless at what he does best, which is writing large gregarious circles around his pitiful colleagues in the field. He’s the best lyricist who’s not a rapper going.”
Plus: new tracks by Superchunk, Richard Dawson & Rhodri Davies’ Hen Ogledd, Action Bronson, Altın Gün, Jacco Gardner, Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Girlpool, Mercury Rev with Margo Price, Carson McHone, Craig Brown Band, Rhett Miller, Robert Ellis, Raoul Vignal, Eiko Ishibashi, Liela Moss, Nadine Khouri, Pearls Before Swine, and Jozef Van Wissem.
Bolachas Now Playing, a new music Spotify playlist updated every Tuesday.
Dre Babinski’s second album as Steady Holiday has been out in the US for a while now, but it has only been released in Europe last Friday. We love it too much to not promote it as our album of the week, even though so many potentially great records were released last October 5. We didn’t even have enough time to listen repeatedly to most of them, so here’s another 1h30 playlist. Songs by Motel Mirrors, Colter Wall,Phosphorescent, Adia Victoria, Swearin’, Fred Thomas (with Anna Burch), Ancient Shapes, Broken Social Scene, Fucked Up (with J Mascis and Jennifer Castle), Super Doppler, Titus Andronicus, Action Bronson, supersilent, Jerusalem In My Heart, Nathan Bowles, Bedouine, Molly Burch, Gabby’s World, Julia Jacklin, Dee White, The Wild Reeds, and Night Shop.
