#235: Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, “Sideways to New Italy”

Is there anything more typical of music publications in the 21st century than waiting for an indie rock band to fail miserably with the release their second record? Don’t let them tell you “Sideways to New Italy” is lacking something important. The new Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever album has all the melodies and hooks you need to survive this festival-less summer so you can pretend everything’s fine. We’re adding a fourth sentence to this paragraph because it seems like it’s mandatory to reference the Go-Betweens and/or the Feelies every single time we talk about this band.

#228: Fiona Apple, “Fetch the Bolt Cutters”

Another week, another half-surprise release. We didn’t have access to a single song off Fiona Apple’s stunning new record (her first in 8 years) and we missed how good it is to be able to be surprised in an age where we already listened to a third of a record by the time it’s out. #223: Sam Doores, “Sam Doores”

We’re pretty sure you won’t run out of interesting things to keep you occupied during your forced quarantine period, but we’ll still add something to that. The Deslondes’ Sam Doores has just released his first solo LP in quite a while, and you can use it to remember how nice life could be when it was still normal. #213: Duster, “Duster”

Our first playlist of the year looks back into December, picking some of the best singles released last month and focusing on Duster’s self-titled record, their first album in 19 years. The lo-fi indie rock trio’s first two albums were largely forgotten by the general public after they were released in the twilight of last century, but an online cult following surged in the last few years. This has culminated on the release of a Numero Group issued boxset earlier in 2019, and a new studio album followed later in the year.

Plus: new singles and songs from forthcoming albums by Khruangbin & Leon Bridges, Son Little, Caroline Rose, Los Coast, Whiskey Wolves of the West, The Yearlings, Jonathan Wilson, Spider Bags, Jung Shackleton & Buck Meek, LEYA, Pop. 1280, BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE/ official, Bill Fay, John Moreland, Terry Allen Art/Music, Holly Macve, Nadia Reid, Squirrel flower, Shannon Lay, Soccer Mommy, Marem Ladson, Branko / Ana Moura / Conan Osiris, and Natalia Lafourcade Oficial.
