Wow, every now and then we also feature non-“songwriter” music as our album of the week! It’s only been half a week of listening to it on repeat, but Moon Duo’s seventh LP is probably their most interesting offering so far. “Stars Are the Light” finds the American psych duo at their grooviest and we simply can’t get enough.
And there’s more: brand new tracks by The Deer, The New Pornographers, Chastity Belt, Vivian Girls, Cate Le Bon and Bradford Cox, The Comet is Coming, Mão Morta, Weeping Icon, Xylouris White, Telefon Tel Aviv, Sturgill Simpson, Loving, Red River Dialect, Darrin Bradbury and Margo Price, Colter Wall, Molly Sarlé, Dori Freeman, Mount Eerie and Julie Doiron, Donivan Berube, Will Johnson, The Milk Carton Kids, the Mountain Goats, and Jim James with The Louisville Orchestra.

This is our 200th playlist since we started back in January 16, 2015. 3603 tracks, 244 hours of music, way more than those 244 hours spent reading, keeping track and listening to the hundreds of artists featured in our playlist so far. Sounds like we’re going to ask you for money, right? Of course not. We’re only going to ask you to tell a friend or two about our playlists. We do this mostly to keep ourselves updated on what’s new and avoid falling into the “music these days just isn’t as good as it was back in the day” trap (which roughly translates to “I got older and gave up my interests”). But the best part about it is knowing someone out there actually listens and values what we do. We know algorithms are pretty cool, but nothing beats a playlist that was handpicked by a group of dedicated people.
This week we focus on Sandro Perri’s latest record, “Soft Landing”, his second LP in two years after a long hiatus. 2018’s “In Another Life” was one of our albums of the year, and “Soft Landing” replicates its winning formula of one long song/a few shorter ones while sounding quite distinct, with electronics playing second fiddle to his good old guitar. The result is similar: another ambient-ish pop masterpiece from the Canadian guitarist and songwriter. Plus: new tracks by I am Oak, Lower Dens, Queen of Jeans, Frankie Cosmos, Young Guv, The Comet is Coming, Los Pirañas, Jeffrey Lewis, Jesse Malin, Garrett T. Capps, Peter Bruntnell, Monks Road Social, The Deer, The Highwomen, Lola Kirke, Lady Wray, Adam Green, Birds of Play, The Milk Carton Kids, Mandolin Orange, and Anna Larson.

Three years later, Sensible Soccers finally drop their third LP and we still have no idea why they’re not taking this record worldwide with a big ass tour. This might be their best album to date. Plus: new songs by Matmos, The Comet is Coming, The Budos Band, The Mystery Lights, Black Pumas, Sasami, illuminati hotties, Lola Kirke, Jenny Lewis,Kim Lenz, Michael Nau, Helado Negro, The Fire Harvest, Tyler Ramsey, The Wild Reeds, Bill MacKay, James Yorkston, Carl Anderson, Baptiste W. Hamon, Daniel Norgren, and Howe Gelb.

We’ve been championing Stella Donnelly for so long now that we didn’t even remember Beware of the Dogs is her first proper LP. A great record from yet another Australian songwriting treasure – check it out if you’re also into Courtney Barnett or Julia Jacklin. Plus: brand new tracks from Meat Puppets, The Hold Steady, Durand Jones & The Indications, Richard Hawley, Nick Waterhouse, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Tropical Fuck Storm, Stef Chura, Snapped Ankles, The Comet is Coming, Protomartyr, Earth, Mathilda, Lomelda, Billie Eilish, Bedouine, Alice Phoebe Lou, Patty Griffin, The Felice Brothers, Adam Ostrar, and Tyler Ramsey.
